Department: Fibers
Title: Workshop: Making Inks and Dyes from Plants
Date: April 10, 2015

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint: In this hands-on workshop, students from fibers and other majors discussed some problems with the current model of synthetic colors, dyes, and inks, and the reasons why plant-based pigments might be a solution. Students were encouraged to re-evaluate their relationship with materials and process.

We extracted colors from both foreign and native plants. Colors included purple, yellow, red, orange, and brown; pigments were used as dye for cloth, paint, and ink. The workshop focused around experimentation, allowing students to try different techniques and gain a better understanding of natural dyeing.
