Fashion Major Melissa Tilley ’15 is the winner of a Sustainability Initiative Micro Grant 2014-15. She worked on her project throughout the year under the guidance of Fashion faculty member Jennifer Varekamp. Melissa Tilley presented the final project in various places including the end of semester Sustainable Projects Pecha Kucha night.
The goal of my project is to demonstrate the value that is still left in garments that people consider to be dated, useless, or that they only used a few times. Using slow fashion techniques, the fabrics can be reworked and brought back to an entirely new life. I have purchased a few garments, shown above, from consignment stores and will be altering them with dyes and hand techniques to create a garment and change it three more times to show the range of potential that lies within the fabric. I have been researching many different techniques employed by other sustainable designers such as heat photogram printing, reverse shibori dyeing, and different appliqué techniques. I will be experimenting with these new techniques over the semester.
